Mitchell’s Clothing

Mitchell’s Men’s Wear was originally located near the Merchants Hotel in 1910 and is the second oldest continuously operating business in downtown Campbellsville.  It moved to its present location at 221 East Main Street in 1911 to the site of the former Commercial Hotel that burned in a fire that destroyed the entire block.  Between 1911 and 1913, this two-story brick building was constructed in a series of two-story common bond brick buildings.  Decorative corbelled brickwork is displayed along the parapet wall.  Transom windows are situated above the paired second floor wood-frame windows. A flared metal awning with a skirted canvas valance and distinct signage enhances the front facade. Well dressed storefront windows flank the central entry doors.  Pressed tin ceilings accent the interior.

Laura Wilds continues the three generations of family members who have continuously owned and operated this store since 1944.  Lynn and Mattie Mitchell opened the store with brother-in-law Dan Hatcher in 1910. In 1946, Lynn, Jr. and Billy Mitchell, Laura’s father, took over the store. Billy Mitchell kept the store open when he was 9 years old while his parents ran down Main Street to see an airplane crash which involved his mother’s nephew.  In 1990, Laura Wild’s returned to Campbellsville and now operates this classic men’s wear shop with her father.

The store sells traditional suits, tuxedo rentals, sportswear, shoes, ties, women’s clothing and accessories. Make downtown Campbellsville your shopping destination this holiday season and shop at Mitchell’s.  As Laura say’s “We’ll be watching for you!”
